by Pam Waters The Glennville Post Office has a new Postmaster, Diane Cantrell, which is official this Saturday, August 29, 2009. However, Diane is not new to the Glennville Post Office; in fact, she feels it is her “home away from home” since she already served as Officer-in-Charge (OIC) in Glennville from June of 2005 to November of 2006 and again in that capacity February 2008 to her appointment this week as Postmaster. “I’ve really enjoyed the time I’ve spent in Glennville and am thrilled with my appointment as Postmaster. The position opening was frozen, like many others, and then opened and the posting was canceled soon after. It was finally re-opened with one week given to apply and interview,” said Diane. “We are lucky in Glennville to have such dedicated employees who are interchangeable in their job duties. They always are willing to fill in where needed,” said Diane. Although born in Maryland, Diane, at age five, settled in Hinesville since Ft. Stewart was the last station for her father, who was in the Army. Seven years ago, Diane and her husband, Ernest, relocated to Odum. The couple have three children: 16-year-old Kieran, 14-year-old Tyler, and seven-year-old Lauren. Diane began her U.S. Postal career in Hinesville in October 1994, serving first as an associate (substitute) rural mail carrier until she became a regular mail carrier in June of 1997. In 1998-1999, she continued her duties as a mail carrier while also assuming the duties of an Officer-in-Charge. In March of 1999 she became a Customer Service Supervisor in Hinesville. “I next took an opening for Supervisor in the Baxley Post Office under Postmaster Terry Quick. When Terry retired, I became Officer-in-Charge in Baxley for several months. I also served as OIC in Claxton from October 2003 to April 2004,” said Diane. She added that their goal is to get the day’s mail out as quickly as possible, and this can be expedited when the correct addresses are used. With Downing Musgrove Hwy. (301) now designated as Veterans Blvd. within the Glennville city limits, businesses and residences in this stretch are encouraged to use this new name. “With the sorting due to automation, mail gets delayed when the address is not correct,” said Diane. She also stressed that clearly marked addresses on residents’ curbside mailboxes helps everyone receive their mail most quickly. Postmaster Cantrell also encouraged patrons’ use of the flat rate shipping boxes, with the prices ranging from $4.95 for an 8-5/8”x5-3/8”x1-5/8” to $13.95 for a 12”x12”x5-1/2” for anywhere in the U.S. and around the world (for packages under 70 lb.) “These flat rates are ideal for those wishing to send items to military overseas and for those who have holiday packages they’ll be mailing in a few months,” she added. Boxes can be obtained from the Post Office or online at USPS.com. Diane looks forward to her new job, although with the same duties she has already been handling for three years. She has also become part of the community with her membership in the Glennville Lions Club and her office as secretary. Diane’s husband already is familiar to many families in Glennville since he has served as a coach of a traveling baseball team on which several Glennville boys played.
