The Glennville Rotary Club/Garden Club annual dinner/auction has become an evening of fellowship with a delicious steak dinner - and all for a great cause.  The funds from the auction are primarily used to fund the annual scholarships for deserving high school seniors who live in Tattnall County, and with a portion of the money raised also going to community projects.
This year’s event, held last Saturday, October 24, at the Tattnall County High School (TCHS) Cafetorium, raised over $12,000, slightly down from last year’s $15,000.
“Overall, we were pleased with the auction items available and the bidding.  The dinner crowd was one of the largest yet, and everyone seemed to have a good time,” said Glennville Rotary Club President Joe Skeens, who welcomed the crowd.  He acknowledged that with the economic downturn during the year of 2009, the club members were pleasantly surprised to see the attendance so high.
The auction, however, has continued to be a success, thanks in large part to the Rotary Club/Garden Club members who plan the event and secure the auction items.  Both a silent and live auction include dozens of items, from services to dry cleaning and car washes to low country boils and accommodations at exclusive inns in historic Savannah.
Matt Mattingly (of Liberty Auction in Hinesville) once again served as the auctioneer, and President Skeens thanked Mattingly for his graciousness in volunteering his auctioneering services so faithfully for many years.
One of the fun facets of the evening is the “Last Man Standing Reverse Raffle.”  This year, only 30 tickets were sold at $50 each.  All ticket holders stand, and as each ticket holder’s name/number is drawn, they are asked to be seated.  The last name drawn is the winner of the item.  Dr. Troy Rahn was this year’s winner of a Beretta A390 Shotgun 26” BBL 20-gauge, valued at over $800.
An array of door prizes began with a drawing for $100 in cash, which went to Onnie Dubberly.
The first auctioned item was a “Baker’s Dozen,” 13 desserts (one a month plus a bonus dessert) prepared by the ladies of the Glennville Garden Club and donated by them.  It went for $270 to Dan Dubberly.
It’s no secret that Tattnall folks like to eat, and the lively bidding on dinners reaps the highest prices most years.  This year was no exception, and Dennis Strickland was the high bidder of $245 for a dinner party for 30 people, which was donated by the Glennville Garden Club.  His bid of $140 will also provide him with a sumptuous feast for Sunday dinner for eight, prepared by David Avery.
In turn, a low country boil with lots of extras at the home of Dennis and Sindy Strickland brought $370 and was purchased by Charlton Rogers.  Joining the Stricklands in hosting this event are Chris and Dana Roessler and Robert and Tammy Waters.
Another dinner for 12, with entertainment by Ryan Dasher, gave the bidder a choice of a seafood platter or steak dinner with all the trimmings.  Dan Dubberly will enjoy this fine dining with his bid of $400  The dinner will be hosted at the cabin of Wayne and Julie Dasher, with Joe and Jeanine Skeens, Joe and Alice McGovern, and Wayne and Deborah Terrell serving as hosts, also.
An oyster roast for ten people at the G&R Farms cabin also includes overnight accommodations at this rustic cabin in Long County.  The lucky bidder, Lamar Smith, took this home for $210.
Tattnall Countians also seem to favor an evening or weekend in Savannah, such as The Inn at Ellis Square, AVIA Savannah, or The Chart House on River Walk.  These items all brought handsome prices.
An overnight stay and adventure in Statesboro for $200 included a vineyard tour, dinner, and an Averitt Center for the Arts presentation.
Sporting events, including pro and college football, golf, and hunting, had bidders vying for these opportunities.  Four tickets to the UGA/Kentucky game on November 21 brought $440 from Joe McGovern.  Four tickets to an Atlanta Falcons game on December 27 found Tammy Kennedy the winner with her bid of $200.
Jimmy McCurdy was the top bidder of $530 for a full day of quail hunting for two hunters at the Battleground Plantation Preserve near Wrightsville, Georgia.  A quail hunting trip for two at Beaver Creek Plantation went to Lamar Smith for $310
Other items up for bid included a delicious German Chocolate Cake made by Lauree Kicklighter ($100); four Century Club passes for the 2010-2011 TCHS year ($190); pair of unfinished rocking chairs ($160); five-ft. handmade cypress swing ($260); replica offshore fishing boat ($210); wingback chair ($95); elegant jewelry ($80); two Adirondack cypress deck chairs ($225); a UGA hammock ($55); and a Remington 870 Express Shotgun 28” BBL VT 12-gauge ($245).
A unique handcrafted item by Gloria Rahn, a longleaf pine basket also made with wood from the Old Matlock Store (with a scene painted by Gloria), brought $160.
Members of the Interact Club who assisted throughout the evening were Amber Steverson, Chase Cowart, Dylan Mulligan, Destiny Levant, Trey Jinks, Caroline Strickland, Sarah Roessler, Andrew Waters, and Wesley Sapp.
The delicious steaks were grilled by Dr. Troy Rahn, Joe McGovern, and Wayne Dasher. The TCHS lunchroom staff helped in the preparation and serving of the meal.  The steaks were generously donated by Piggly Wiggly Manager Jimmy Johnson, who also helped cook the steaks.
Music for the evening was provided by guitarist Stephen DeLoach, a 4-H member who performs with Clovers and Company.
The Glennville Rotary Club would like to thank everyone who purchased tickets for the dinner/auction and to all those who so generously donated items or services to the auction.
Special thanks are extended to Charlton Rogers, Dr. Paul Thompson, and Rotary Corporation for the monetary donation to the auction.
