Joshua Harrison

by Michelle Wolf
Joshua Eric Harrison, a teacher at Pinewood Christian Academy (PCA) in Bellville, died Wednesday, September 30, 2009, at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon, Georgia, after a short illness.  The 26-year-old taught seventh and eighth grade English.
In only his first year teaching at PCA, Joshua was popular with students, staff, and faculty.
Pinewood Headmaster John Dorminey broke the news Wednesday morning to a  grieving faculty and student body, informing them of Harrison’s untimely death.  One of the Academy’s bright and promising young teachers, Harrison was admitted to the trauma unit in Macon in mid September.  Doctors and medical staff worked frantically, but unsuccessfully for 12 days to save his life. Administrators, teachers, parents, and dozens of students from Pinewood met with the Harrison family in Vidalia on Friday and Saturday to share their memories of Harrison.  Joshua will be remembered at Pinewood for the remarkable contributions he made through instruction and leadership both in and out of the classroom.
During a visit last week with Joshua, faculty members Becky Thrift and Paula Bush were overwhelmed with his expression of concern regarding the school and his students.  It was very obvious that he loved his job and students at PCA.
Joshua was a native and lifelong resident of Toombs County.  In 2008, he graduated Summa Cum Laude from Brewton-Parker College in Mt. Vernon with a Bachelor’s Degree in English.
Funeral services were held Saturday, October 3, in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home in Vidalia, with the Reverend Joseph Kost officiating.  Internment was in Lakeview Memorial Gardens.
Joshua is survived by his parents, Phillip and Lee Harrison and a brother, Caleb Harrison of Vidalia;  paternal grandmother, Betty Harrison of Milledgeville; maternal grandparents, Joseph and Carolyn Kost; maternal great-grandmother, R.V. Croft of Brunswick; several aunts; uncles; and cousins.
