by Michelle Wolf Although the Tattnall County High School (TCHS) Homecoming Parade didn’t officially start until 4 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, a full hour beforehand, plenty of people could already be seen staking out the best viewing areas along the parade route in Glennville. The excitement built as appreciative cheers roared from the onlookers as the parade began. Sylvester Ashford was this year’s Parade Grand Marshal. He is known for his career as Principal at Seckinger Elementary School in Glennville, and later when the school became Glennville Elementary School. Mr. Ashford worked for the Tattnall County School System for 40 years before he retired in 1990 with the title, “Principal Emeritus.” Mr. Ashford has served as a Glennville City Councilman, vice chairman of the Tattnall County Board of Education, secretary/treasurer of the Glennville Development Authority, and is a life member of various organizations, such as: Retired Teachers Association of Georgia, Georgia Association of Educators, National Education Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Legion. Mr. Ashford serves as Chairman of the Deacons’ Ministry at First African Missionary Baptist Church of Glennville. His wife, Juanita Ashford, who rode with him in the parade, taught many of Glennville’s students as a 7th grade English teacher at Glennville Middle School. She also served on the Tattnall County Board of Education. This year’s parade produced a bumper crop of bright, colorful floats to wow the crowd along with the TCHS Sound of Pride Marching Band, the combined middle school bands, and cheerleaders galore. The Best Community award was presented to the Sunshine Place and Pledger House of Glennville for their “Sink the Buccaneers” float. The Most Spirited award was given to the Collins Middle School Cheerleaders. The TCHS Athletic Boosters earned the Most Creative award for their “Warriors’ Territory” float. The Best Warrior award was given to TCHS FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) for their “Beach the Buccaneers” float. The Best Future Warrior award was given to Glennville Elementary School Pre-K for their float “Flush ‘Em.” The Best Overall award went to TCHS FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) for their “The Buc Stops Here” float. Honorable Mentions were given to Reidsville Elementary School Kindergarten and the Glennville United Methodists Church floats.
