Arnold Ray Akins
Arnold Ray Akins, former Bulloch County Sheriff, age 70, died Saturday, October 24, 2009, at The Doctors Hospital of Tattnall in Reidsville. He served as Sheriff of Bulloch County for six terms, from 1976 to 2000. The native and lifelong resident of Bulloch County was a 1957 graduate of Portal High School and a veteran of the Georgia National Guard. In a career in law enforcement, he served as a deputy for several years and as Chief Deputy for over eight years under Sheriff Paul Nevil. He was a charter member of the Downtown Rotary Club, and a member of the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association. He was active with many civic and charitable organizations throughout the state of Georgia. He attended Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bunny Akins; his father, Rayford Akins; and a brother, Gary Akins.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Julianna and Clint Waits of Statesboro; three grandchildren: Abi and Andrew Lovell and Jalee Waits; his mother, Neva Newton Akins of Statesboro; a sister and brother-in-law, Elaine and Tommy Lennon of Statesboro; and three brothers and sisters-in-law: Randy and Sandra Akins, Delton and Irene Akins, and Herman and Sherri Akins, all of Statesboro; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 27, at Statesboro First Baptist Church, with Elder Steve Taylor and Dr. Larry Guido officiating. Burial was in Bulloch Memorial Gardens.
Active pallbearers were Ellis Wood, Matt Wood, J.T. Long, Raybon Anderson, Eddie Wood, Ken Brown, Kirk McGlammery, and B.J. Tillman.
Honorary pallbearers were Sheriff Lynn Anderson and members (past and present) of the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office; all law enforcement personnel; all Bulloch County Public Safety personnel; all Bulloch County Judiciary personnel; Dr. Joseph Carl Hand; and the “Monday Night Supper Club.”
